ARTIST BIO
Although he has been actively painting since he was about four years
old,
Jarrett Holderby's full-time career in art began in the summer of 1981
while he lived in northern England.
Jarrett rented a room and a studio from the local parish priest in
Bentley, West Yorkshire,
in exchange for doing odd jobs around the vicarage. When he wasn't
painting, Jarrett did
construction work around the church, tended livestock and engaged in house-sitting
and child-care for
Father David and his wife Christine. His duties also included grave
digging from time to time.
For more than a year Jarrett lived in England, painting original watercolors
of architecture as well as traditional
pastoral settings unique to England. Jarrett also lived for a while
in London and on the European continent,
especially enjoying the rich cultural atmosphere of Paris which continues
to inspire artists today as it has for centuries past.
After returning to America, Jarrett pursued a career in traditional
commercial illustration and advertising. Since
most of his life was spent in Alaska, in 1989 his artistic direction
eventually shifted to wildlife, with a specific emphasis on marine animals.
Of particular interest to him are the whales, animals which he has
literally followed across the globe in his efforts to portray them
in their natural habitat. These efforts have taken him to South America,
Antarctica, The Republic of China and all over the
United States, particularly the greater Pacific Northwest.
In 1994 Jarrett was introduced to the computer and was immediately hooked.
He works in several different
programs, both 2D and 3D, including: Fractal Design, Painter03, 04
and 05; Adobe Photoshop 03 and 05;
Bryce 01, 02, and 03; Fractal Design Detailer; Poser 01, 02 and 03 and
Infini-D 4.0.
He has in the past worked in Alias on the SGI platform and is currently
at work learning both
Light Wave and 3D Studio Max.
Nevertheless, he still paints very regularly using the traditional
tools of the trade,
with his originals selling routinely to his many collectors worldwide.
When painting using traditional methods,
Jarrett works in oils on canvas and acrylics on canvas.
Jarrett has just recently decided to postpone any future paintings of
marine life and concentrate on
landscape painting. He has moved from his home in the North Seattle
area to the
wide open spaces of Colorado. We will miss Jarrett's amazing ability
to capture the marine life on canvas
but we look forward to his new creations.
