ABOUT THE SCULPTURE
The sculpture "Bongo and Fossey" is based on the real-life story of an exceptional pair
of Western Lowland Gorillas formerly housed at the Columbus Zoo, Columbus, Ohio.
From the time of Fossey's birth to mother Bridgette, Bongo, the father, took an
uncharacteristic interest in his newborn son.  At first, Bridgette was hesitant about
allowing 430# Bongo too much interaction with Fossey, but Bongo's persistence
eventually won her over, and Bongo and Fossey soon developed a close relationship.
When Bridgette died in 1987 leaving behind fourteen-month-old Fossey, zoo officials
were extremely concerned about the infants fate.  To their amazement and elation,
30-year-old Bongo took over parental duties and began hoarding food and building
straw nests for Fossey.  Bongo became a model father, taking care of all of Fossey's
needs.  The relationship continued to grow, as did Fossey.  The two became inseparable
       - their bodies always touching.  Sadly, when Fossey was only four,
Bongo died unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 34.
The sculpture is a loving tribute to the  relationship they shared.
Fossey is currently a 13-year-old emerging silverback on breeding loan to the Little
Rock Zoo, Little Rock, AR.  Fossey continues to embody all of the strength and
devotion of his father and the warmth and caring of his mother.
